How we seal our homes

We stop air movement through the ceiling insulation where it would be a problem.  The pink foamboard and white foam were applied here to prevent air movement into an unheated area of the attic.

Note how foam is used to seal the studs to the wall and to stop air movement through wiring holes.

Caulking the electrical boxes stops air and moisture transfer into the wall.  One of the things we now do is to use sealed can lights in kitchen areas.  When there is a vacuum in the house, this used to be one of the main areas that cold air would enter the house.

Caulking Electrical Boxes

All joints in the furnace ductwork are caulked with special mastic to prevent air leakage.

The black thing with R6 printed on it is a fresh air intake.  This is a new computerized system to bring in fresh air when there is a vacuum in the house and periodically when it senses a need.  It will turn on the furnace fan and circulate a little fresh air as needed.  This will lower human created “bad air” due to hair sprays, etc.
